On the suitability of the SRTM DEM and ASTER GDEM for the compilation of topographic parameters in glacier inventories

چکیده
Topographic parameters in glacier inventories are a requirement to analyze glacier characteristics and are of vital importance for several subsequent applications. To obtain the topographic information a digital elevation model (DEM) is required; however, in many regions of the world no national or local DEM of sufficient quality is available. With the SRTM DEM and the ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM), two datasets of reasonable resolution and promising quality are freely available for nearly all glacierized mountain ranges in the world. However, both DEMs have artifacts and errors, caused by the different acquisition techniques and the challenges posed by the rough high-mountain terrain and the special surface characteristics of glaciers. In this study, topographic glacier parameters as derived from both DEMs were compared to reference values as derived from a high-quality Swiss national DEM. All DEMs were reprojected to the (metric) UTM system and resampled to a 25 m and a 100 m cell size. For each of the resulting DEM versions, seven topographic parameters (minimum, maximum, mean, and median elevation, mean slope, mean aspect, and mean aspect sector) were calculated for 1786 glaciers lager than 0.1 km2 in Switzerland.

Evaluating digital elevation models for glaciologic applications: An example from Nevado Coropuna, Peruvian Andes
This paper evaluates the suitability of readily available elevation data derived from recent sensors – the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) – for glaciological applications. The study area is Nevado Coropuna (6426 m), situated in Cordillera Ampato of Southern Peru. The glaciated area was 82.6 km in 1962, based...
متن کاملCompilation of a glacier inventory for the western Himalayas from satellite data: methods, challenges and results
Due to their sensitive reaction to changes in climatic conditions, glaciers have been selected as an essential climate variable (ECV). Although a large amount of ice is located in the Himalayas, this region is yet only sparsely represented in global glacier databases. Accordingly, a sound and comprehensive change assessment or determination of water resources was not yet possible. In this study...
متن کاملAccuracy Assessment of Global Topographic Data (srtm & Aster Gdem) in Comparison with Lidar for Tropical Montane Forest
Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) and ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM) provide topographic data in a global scale which are freely available for users. The potential use of these datasets for many forestry applications is highly depending on the accuracy of the datasets. In this study, we evaluated the accuracy of SRTM and ASTER GDEM version 2 with high accuracy topographic da...
متن کاملAnalsysis of Aster Gdem Elevation Models
Digital elevation models (DEM) are of fundamental importance for remote sensing. With a DEM the three-dimensional positioning, requiring a stereo model can be reduced to a two-dimensional solution just based on a single image. With the free of charge availability of the SRTM-height models, covering the land area from 56° southern up to 60.25° northern latitude a nearly world wide coverage is gi...
متن کاملEffects of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) Spatial Resolution on Hydrological Simulation
Digital Elevation Model is one of the most important data for watershed modeling whit hydrological models that it has a significant impact on hydrological processes simulation. Several studies by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) as useful Tool have indicated that the simulation results of this model is very sensitive to the quality of topographic data. The aim of this study is evaluati...
